What is a shoulder bag, and what else is it called?
A shoulder bag is any bag with a strap made to sit on one shoulder, so the bag rests at your side or tucked under your arm. It’s also called a shoulder purse or shoulder handbag, and many of its styles have names of their own: the hobo, the baguette, the tote and the flap bag.
The strap defines it. It’s long enough to go over your shoulder, but too short to go across your body; that’s what separates a shoulder bag from a crossbody. Most have a drop (the distance from the top of the strap to the top of the bag) of about 20 to 30 cm.
What are the different types of shoulder bags?
There are eight you’ll see everywhere: the hobo, the baguette, the tote, the flap bag, the East–West, the bucket, the saddle and the convertible. They differ in shape and structure, from soft and slouchy to boxy and polished.

What is a mini shoulder bag called?
A mini shoulder bag is usually called a baguette: a small, slim bag on a short strap, named for the way it tucks under the arm like a French loaf. You’ll also see mini bag and pochette (French for “little pocket”) used for the same idea.
Fendi made the name famous with its Baguette in 1997, and now almost every house makes one. Many brands name theirs by size instead: Coach’s Tabby 20 is the smaller sister of the Tabby 26, and the number is roughly its width in centimetres.
What is a handbag vs a shoulder bag?
“Handbag” is the umbrella word for any bag you carry every day, so a shoulder bag is a kind of handbag. When people compare the two, they usually mean a top-handle bag, held in the hand or the crook of the arm, against a bag that rides on the shoulder.
The real difference is your hands. A top-handle bag looks more formal and keeps its shape on a desk or a table. A shoulder bag leaves you free to hold a phone, a coffee or a child’s hand. Many bags now do both, with a top handle and a detachable strap.
Shoulder bag vs crossbody bag: what’s the difference?
It comes down to the strap. A shoulder bag’s strap sits on one shoulder and the bag hangs at your side. A crossbody’s longer strap goes over one shoulder and across your chest, so the bag rests at the opposite hip, in front of you.
| Shoulder bag | Crossbody bag | |
|---|---|---|
| Strap drop | About 20–30 cm | About 50–60 cm |
| How it’s worn | On one shoulder | Across the body |
| Hands free | Mostly | Completely |
| Security | At your side, under your arm | In front of you, where you can see it |
| The look | More polished | More relaxed |
| Best for | Work, dinners, everyday | Travel, markets, busy days out |
What is a crossbody bag?
A crossbody bag is a small-to-medium bag on a long strap worn diagonally across the body, from one shoulder to the opposite hip. It’s the most hands-free bag there is, and one of the most secure, because it sits in front of you.
Can I wear a crossbody bag as a shoulder bag?
Yes, if the strap adjusts. Shorten it to a drop of about 20–30 cm (roughly shoulder to waist) and a crossbody sits like a shoulder bag. Bags sold as convertible come with two straps, or one adjustable strap, for exactly this.
Look for “convertible” or “two detachable straps” in the details. At ULVARE that includes 8 convertible bags from PKR 40,740, and Coach’s Tabby 20, which comes with a short strap and a long one.
What are the three types of bags, and the main styles?
Most bags fall into three families, by how you carry them: in the hand (top-handle bags and clutches), on the shoulder (shoulder bags, hobos and totes) and across the body (crossbodies and belt bags). Every named style sits in one of those three.
The styles you’ll meet most often:
- Tote: open and roomy, two handles.
- Satchel: structured, flat-bottomed, with a top handle.
- Hobo: soft and slouchy, on one strap.
- Baguette: small and slim, tucked under the arm.
- Bucket: round-bottomed, often with a drawstring.
- Saddle: a curved half-moon.
- Clutch: no strap at all, held in the hand.
- Crossbody and camera bag: on a long strap, across the body.
- Belt bag and backpack: fully hands-free.
Which brand is best for shoulder bags?
It depends mostly on your budget. For everyday luxury, Coach and Tory Burch are the most dependable names: good leather, classic shapes, fair prices. Step up to Polène for quiet Parisian design, or to Valentino and Dior when the bag itself is the statement.
